Window Stars

When the days get shorter, dark and grey, I begin to search for ways to brighten things up around the house. Of course the Christmas decorations go a long way, but they only last until January 6th (Epiphany). I also want some decorations that will take us all season long, from Halloween to Candlemas (February 2nd) when things start to brighten up again. For me, a simple and beautiful answer to this is Window Stars.

I’ve followed tutorials in these two books:

All Year Round

Crafts Through The Year

This is the kite paper I use. You can also use regular tissue paper, but you’ll need to iron it flat and smooth, and then cut to size. Also keep in mind that the kite paper is thicker and more durable than tissue paper.

Beyond kite paper, I use a glue stick to adhere the folds nicely, and then glue dots to secure the window stars to the window.

I love the way they stars look. I also think they would make beautiful gifts for friends and family this time of year. It does require pretty accurate folding, but definitely might be a gift older children could make for grandparents and other relatives. Cookie (6) is eager to give it a try this year, and I think she may be ready to start out with some ironed tissue paper. I will have to make extra for Apple (4) who is also wanting to try—but it’s probably beyond his direction following abilities.
