Respectful, Natural Teething Tips and Remedies from a Seasoned Mom of Four

Mimi at 4AM one morning, with the Nippii

Teething babies are no joke. The fussiness. The midnight wakings. Poor naps. Chewing on everything. And for the nursing dyads, seemingly endless dry nursing sessions. I repeat, teething babies are no joke.

Recently, Mimi has been having some trouble sleeping, and seeming to want to nurse constantly. On top of this, she’s been extra fussy. I was beginning to think something might actually be wrong, but then she popped both of her upper incisors.

I saw this coming. One good clue was her bottom teeth coming through. In my experience, my little ones never make too much fuss over those first bottom teeth. Maybe they’re caught by surprise by it, or maybe the lower jaw just doesn’t hurt in the same way.

Either way, I’m thankful for the heads up before things start to get real. This time, with Mimi being Baby #4, I had a pretty good idea of which products worked and which didn’t.

In an attempt to save other parents some of my earlier grief, I’ve decided to share my favorite teething products with you today. Most of these items come from Amazon for ease of purchase, but some are from my favorite small brands.

Best Teething Products

We love The Little Bamber here! It’s natural rubber infused with amber. Whether that’s really a thing or not, I can’t say. What I can say Mimi loves this teether a whole lot and reaches for it first every time. Be it the nooks and crannies or just the cute giraffe look, it’s a solid winner. And we hope the amber helps!

I remember when I was a young mom, everyone told me to rub some Oracle on my little ones gums. Well meaning advice, but not a great idea in practice (plus even baby Orajel is for ages 2+). I think this Mother’s Bliss Organic Teething Gel is what the kindly advice givers really mean to suggestion. Same idea, except much better for babe!

A long time favorite in our house, our Calmies ball is going on its 3rd sweet babe now. I am firstly amazed we haven’t lost it, the dog hasn’t eaten it, and beyond that the natural rubber still looks amazing! This thing is the first thing I hand off to their little outstretched hand. Easy to grab and hold, be perfect for chewing on.

The Fridababy Not-to-Cold-to-Hold frozen teether is great! There is always room for more frozen teethers in the freezer and this set offers not just two freezies but a holder to protect babes little fingers. If your babe is anything like mine, they’ll appreciate this fact.

I can’t say I don’t like to try new products, and this was one of them. The Nippii frozen pacifier has been well enjoyed here over the last few months, by Mimi herself, and any time older brother Noodle can get ahold of it, he happily enjoys it too.

Mimi’s other favorite teether, the first being the Little Bamber), is the RaZberry Plus. We have the regular RaZberry too, which she likes plenty. But she loves her RaZberry Plus. I think it’s easier for her to grab. She seems not to have trouble grabbing the regular RaZberry, but she does seem to throw it a lot. So, she likes them both fine but she throws the RaZberry Plus less. Also, the RaZberry Plus head is firm, whereas the original Razberry has a more air filled pacifier effect.

Mimi’s favorite thing to chew on is really frozen blueberries , but she needs some help with that. To that end, we love the Oxo Tot Silicone Self Feeder (2 pack here) I love that it’s easy to snap together and doesn’t come apart until I am ready for it to. Maria loves the generous feeder size that fits plenty of blueberries, and the loop handle that’s perfect for her to hold. If she was smaller, I’d freeze breastmilk in ice cube trays and pop that in here—no popsicle mold needed.

Uriel’s Amber Amethyst teething cream is a new one in our house, and I can’t say for certain it works (like many baby items), it certainly doesn’t make anything worse either. It has a pleasant, light smell. It does recommend ages 2+, but we’ve been using it carefully (ask your Doctor) without issue, and she at least seems to enjoy the act of me rubbing her jaw (lots of smiles), and perhaps the light pleasant smell.

Honorable mention: Really, all you need are some wash clothes and a little water. Wet them and then thoroughly ring them out. Twist them onto a little handle and pop into the freezer. I am not sure if there is really anything better.

Should I mention Hyland’s Teething Tablets? Yea they exist here. We use them. Mimi enjoys sucking on them one at a time. I’m not against homeopathy or ignorant of it’s science, but after 4 kids I just can’t say they work, but I can’t say they don’t either. I haven’t been meticulous with my observations. Teething tablets, teething pods, teething gel, teething oil and chamomile liquids, I feel similarly about. They go in the mouth, taste sweet and help babe redirect her focus (away from the pain). Yes they contain medicines which definitely should help. But for me, honestly, it feels a little more like checking that box and feeling like “I’m doing everything I can” even if the real answer is just frozen washcloths.
