This week, in preparation for Thanksgiving,
my kids and I are doing a Cranberry Thanksgiving unit. Cranberry Thanksgiving is one of our favorite Thanksgiving Books, and we also love cranberries as a snack. Last year we tried fermenting cranberries for Thanksgiving, and this year we decided it would be fun do to again as a part of our unit.
These fermented cranberries in honey are absolutely so easy, they are a great practical life activity to do with your kids in the kitchen. They require very little prep, involve some fun steps, and the results are really tasty. We add cinnamon and tangerine juice (or orange juice) for extra flavor, but the honey and cranberry blend on its own it’s delightful! The fermented taste is very mild in the final product, and these are full of wonderful nutrition too. Please do remember no honey for babies under 1 year old age.
Necessary Tools and Ingredients
This recipe is so simple, the tools and ingredients needed are very minimal. ya
Tools Needed
A jar with lid (or fermenting crock, airlock, etc)
A bamboo skewer (or similar object to relieve air bubbles)
A colander
A toothpick (to poke holes in cranberries)
Ingredients
Cranberries
Honey
Cinnamon
Orange juice
After you have all of your tools and ingredients, the rest is easy.
Easy Fermented Cranberries in Honey
First, have someone(s) wash your cranberries.
Then, every cranberry needs to be poked. This is the part that’s great for fine motor development.
Drop them in the jar.
Add orange juice.
And cinnamon.
Top with honey.
Poke out any air bubbles using the bamboo skewer or similar poking device.
Cover with lid.
That’s it, your done! Make sure to check them each day (at least once) to see how everything is going. I recommend leaving them for about a week before opening them to check, unless you’re in a warmer area or you notice that it’s particularly bubbly. You will notice the honey will become dark red and much thinner. There will be some bubbles, but the more bubbles you allow to develop the more fermented the flavor will be.
Have you ever fermented with your kids before?
