The metal inset stands were one of my first cardboard projects. After making the metal inset tray and a few other small cardboard projects, I knew I had to tackle a project that would improve the use of our current materials, rather than just making something new.

This template will work with cardboard, foamboard and even plywood! Tools needed will depend on the material you use, but in general I recommend:

* Gorilla Glue Wood Glue

* Scotch Blue Painters Tape

* Craft knife

* A craft ruler or other straight edge

You could also use hot glue, which would elimate any drying time, but in my experience hot glue tends to dry so rigidly that it will crack and separate on these types of projects.

If your material is shorter than 27.5”, I recommend cutting two smaller pieces (11” and 16.5”), and either attaching them underneath using a small (approx 3-4×6.5) piece of the same material, or just cutting extra risers to support each piece individually. Instead of 6 (12 for cardboard), use 8 (or 16).

1. Print the pattern– find it here.

2. Cut off the left edge of each page along the dashed line.

3. Overlap the pages, lining up dashed lines and glue or tape together.

4. Use template to cut out needed items. If you are using cardboard, I recommend cutting 2x as many riser pieces as you actually need, and then gluing two pieces together to form one stronger piece.

5. Attach inset stop to the bottom edge of metal inset stand back. Glue and tape or clamp to hold until dry.

6. Flip over, glue and clamp or tape the risers to the bottom side of the stand back, in the middle and at both edges. Make sure the low end of the riser touches the same edge of the back (opposite side) as the inset stop.

7. Allow to dry for 24 hours if using wood glue.
