About Kaycee

Hi! I’m Kaycee, the mom behind Milams at Home. I thought it was about time I introduced myself!

I’ve been wanting to introduce myself for a while, but honestly I’ve put it off because I just wasn’t completely loving any of the photos of myself, at least not without a whole group of other people in the photo.

But, I’m trying to put my perfectionistic tendencies aside, even here on IG, and so I’ll let a good enough photo be good enough.

I’m Mom to 3 littles; Cookie who is 6, Apple who is 3.5 and Noodle who is 21 months old. We currently live in Washington State at my childhood home, but not long ago we moved from Virginia, where both of the boys (and their daddy) were born.

My husband and I met while I was still in college, studying Advertising and Public Relations, and he was stationed here in Washington close to my university. I was working at a waitress at a popular chain sports bar at night. I always had a rule never to date a customer, but I broke my rule that night after he joked that he was a “cobbler” or at least could make a cobbler for me sometime. I have no idea why I was charmed by that, but I guess it worked.

I haven’t made any formal use of my degree, however I find that understanding the advertising and PR world comes in handy every day in our media saturated world. It’s partially for this reason I discovered Montessori, I was looking for something that was less … commercial, I guess. I am so happy to say I found what I was looking for—and so so much more! In some ways Montessori has become very commercial in the last few years, but it definitely doesn’t have to be.

Other facts about me:

I love reading, though I had earlier struggles with it. Once I “got it” (3rd grade, btw) I excelled well beyond grade level. I was then that kid staying up all night reading books. These days I do find it hard to read anything but picture books to the kids. I am trying to to make it more a part of my every day, my book list piles up fast. Also I love buying books, and going to the library. I really think I should have been a librarian, but I didn’t even know that was a choice really.

I have #ADHD ?. It poses challenges daily, but the more I get to know how it challenges me, work on accommodating myself, and most importantly accepting myself, the easier it is to live with.

I rode horses growing up, and hope to be able to do so again someday. There is something so peaceful and grounding about riding horses, connecting with such a large (thoughtful, understanding) animal that nothing else can replicate. My last horse I sold when I was 20 and in college. Her name was Coda and she was a Red Roan Quarter Horse.

I’m not a big TV person, but I used to love playing computer games. My favorites were Black and White 2 and Sim City 4. I played a ton of the Sims too. ? In college I got a Wii, but I’m not very coordinated with a game controller so we mostly just did a lot of Wii Bowling.

Before studying Pr/Advertising, I spent some time in Computer Science. I loved writing code but hated debugging. I decided on PR when I learned I could still nerd it up, just using my coding skills for web design, and it also benefitted from my graphic design skills as well.

I’m not very coordinated. If it doesn’t sound like it yet, I was more of a bookish/computer kid, and sports weren’t my thing. This is somewhat result of developing asthma as a child, but even before that, I definitely always picked last for kickball, and every other team activity. (Fortunately for my children, my husband was and is extremely athletic, though regardless of this we make it a strong priority to spend a lot of time outside using all of their muscles and developing both gross and fine motor skills).

I have a tremendous sweet tooth. I’ve really worked on it in recent years, because I fear the long term health effects of eating too much sugar, but I sure do enjoy it. My favorite sweetie is probably cookies, chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin or good cut out sugar cookies (not the thick soft kind with frosting, but the ones that are crisp around the edges and use almond extract, iced or plain). I also really like Tropical Starburst (not so much the original) and gummy bears (Black Forest Organic now, but Albanese are delicious and Haribo is the OG).

That’s all I can think to share for now, but I will come back and add more as I remember any fun tidbits about myself.
