Hi! I’m Kaycee.
I’m the mom and writer here at Milams at Home. I write to inspire mothers and families to have richer, fuller and more fulfilling lives together.
I’m a stay at home mom of three children, ages 5, 2, and 10 months. My husband, Sean, is organic farmer. Together we live on a small family homestead in the Pacific Northwest.
We are a passionate, hardworking, fun loving, homeschooling family. We love exploring nature, creating and building new things, celebrating life and the seasons with family and friends, and spending time with each other.
Aside from motherhood and it’s many aspects, I enjoy decorating, sewing, photography, baking and throwing parties. Like the native Washingtonian I am, I drink way too much coffee, usually black though I truly love a cappuccino. I love sweets but I am working on it. I love sitting with a cup of tea and a good book, and especially watching my kids play and learn and grow.
After I had our first child was born in 2014, our daughter, I was immediately so in love with her. I could hardly put her down, I could have just stared at her forever (and without other kids to take care of, I’m pretty sure I did). I had always dreamed of being a mother, and I worked very hard while I was pregnant to prepared myself for motherhood—or so I thought.
At first, I felt fairly well prepared (as well as a first time mother can be, anyway). The newborn phase was trying, but at least I knew what to do, and what to expect. As she got bigger, though, I became more uncertain. Feeding, bathing, changing, reading books and “play time” were covered, but I was filled with uncertainty. I knew what to do with her, and certainly what not to do with her… but I didn’t know how to be with her.
At the time, I thought toys might be the answer, though it was evident that it was not the toys we currently had. She would hardly look at them! She was much more interested in crawling around and taking things out of the cupboards. I was at a loss. At some point, I saw a photo of Montessori toddler materials, and down the rabbit hole I went.
I’m so thankful now for taking that leap, and beginning to learn about Montessori. It has transformed my life. I know now that I was longing for a way to develop a rich and loving relationship with my daughter, and though I’ve been inspired by many others in the time since, I do feel Maria Montessori showed me the way.
Today, I continue to work hard to learn and grow as a parent, and as a person. Here on the blog, I write about the full spectrum of things that encompass my life as a stay at home parent, and our life as a family: homeschooling, activities with kids, cooking and meal planning, cleaning, our favorite things, frugality, seasonal living, Montessori and Waldorf, holistic and intentional living, as well as motherhood.
